Audience Research: Feedback on My Song

Here I have made a slideshare to show the results of my survey about my chosen song for my media product. Click here for the link to my survey.

Conventions: Genre

As I explained in my previous post, I am going to discuss the indie-pop genre because that is the genre I am doing and I need to understand the conventions within the genre so that I can incorporate them into my own product. A few examples of conventions in different genres would be: rock using live performances/footage and dark colours, pop using bright colours and usually some kind of performance and indie having an abstract video. I have looked at different music videos in the indie-pop genre and I have come to find and understand the conventions used within this genre.

Indie-Pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the UK in the mid 1980's. Typical instruments used within this genre are: vocals, bass, drums and guitar (these are what you are most likely to see when watching an indie-pop video). The term 'Indie' is used to describe artists that are signed to independent labels, as they are not as well known as artists signed to major labels. Artists within the indie-pop genre include artists like: Bastille, Bon Iver, Sky Ferreira, Foster the People, M83, Ladyhawke, Passion Pit, Swim Deep, The XX, Vampire Weekend and many others.

Below I have created a prezi to show all the different conventions within the indie-pop genre with existing music videos from artists of the genre.

Conventions: Form

Conventions are the main part of a music video and without them there wouldn't be a successful product at all. I have watched many different existing products and also researched the main conventions within music videos. The reason I have done this is so I can understand and know exactly what I need to include within my video to make it conventional. Different genres have different conventions so I will discuss later on what the my genre (indie-pop) includes, but first I am going to show what the general conventions of all music videos.

These conventions include:
  • Narrative
  • Performance: this depends mostly on genre (live performance, dancing, lip-syncing)
  • A wide range of mise-en-scene (props, locations, costumes etc)
  • Artist featuring in their video (acting or as themselves)
  • Variety of Cinematography (close ups, long shots, movement, low/high angles, wide shots etc)
  • Range of editing (rhythmic editing, jump cuts, overlapping, fades, slow motion, text etc)
  • Colour: to reflect the artists image or match the emotions of the song
  • Sound (non-diegetic or sound breaks)
I have created a PowerPoint slide to show examples of all the different conventions I have mentioned.

Audience Research

Click here for the link to my survey.

Above shows how I put my poll on my blog. I did this by using gadgets because I thought it was easier to put an actual poll rather than linking it, therefore saving people time and making it easier for people to find.

Also, to gain more feedback from people, I asked my teacher if they could send out my survey, therefore gaining more feedback from a wide range of people my age and not just media students.

Initial Ideas

These are my 3 initial ideas planned out on a prezi. I have used prezi.com because it is a good way to present my ideas in an interactive way.

Treatment

A narrative featuring a male protagonist who lip-syncs about loss of love. Slow motion and dark lighting. Close ups and medium close ups to show emotion of the protagonist. Locations will be studio, field, house, abandoned places for loneliness.
